The value of human life in Saudi

Carol over at American Bedu has an interesting post this morning that asks – and in some small way answers – the questions of how much a life is worth.
The answer – at least here in Saudi – might shock you – it sure shocked (and angered and disgusted and a whole list of other similar reactions) me!
For example, when an American soldier is killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, his or her surviving family receives a $500,000 death benefit from the US government.
Health insurance groups – both in the States and around the world – value a human life at around $50,000 a year. With the average American life expectancy at just over 78 years, that works out to about 3.9 million USD.
In California, Stanford University economists have calculated the value of human life is a little higher – about $129,000 per year or a tad over 10 million USD over a lifetime.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has set a value of $5 million for a human life – or more specifically a typical American life, while the Environmental Protection Agency is a little more optimistic, valuing a human life at about 7.2 million.
Which gets me back to Saudi Arabia where, according to American Bedu, the price for a human life is a little bit lower.
Ok, a lot lower.
Saudi Arabia – and the rest of the Muslim world apparently – has devised a system of “blood money” – basically how much someone has to pay if they take another person’s life.
According to American Bedu:
There is no specific amount for Diyyat and the fine does not differ based on the gender, victim, or state of freedom of the victim. However, the Qur’an leaves open its quantity, nature and other related affairs to the customs and traditions of a society. The Qur’an directs to pay Diyyat according to this law both in case of intentional as well as unintentional murder.
But, of course, that hasn’t stopped Saudi from setting up it’s own value scale for a human life.
Under that system…
The life of a Muslim man is worth $26,222 USD, while the life of a Muslim woman comes in at just under 13 grand – a 50% discount based solely on gender.
The life of a Christian man is worth as much as the life of a Muslim woman, some $13,333 USD. And again, the life of a Christian woman is about half of that of a Christian man, or $6,666 USD.
And here’s where things get tricky – and telling.
In Saudi Arabia, the life of a Hindu man is worth just $1,777 USD.
The life of a Hindu woman, on the other hand, is worth only half that, or about $888 USD.
Let me recap.
In Saudi Arabia, the life of a Muslim man is about equal to the cost of my Hummer H3 while the life of a Christian man is worth about the same as a second-hand Chevy. For the life of a Hindu man, however, you couldn’t even buy a good moped.
In Saudi Arabia, the life of a Muslim woman is about equal to the cost of a hand-tied Iranian rug, while the life of a Christian woman like myself might cover the cost of the designer watch so many of the locals here adore. For the life of a Hindu woman, however, you couldn’t buy a month’s worth of groceries for a family of four.
So, tell me again that all lives are precious and have value in Saudi Arabia?
Oh, and did I mention that a well-bred camel can go for several hundred thousand US dollars at auction?
Go figure!

A country or culture can claim no racism all they want...but figures like this clearly show racism at its worst.
The prophets last sermon instructed Muslims not to make such a distinction among people...but obviously that has long since been forgotten.
All I can say...if your going to be killed accidently or on purpose...dont do it in Saudi.
Ha, ha...sorry, but it's either laugh or cry at this post and just the way you put it at the end made me chuckle. Well, Saudi is not on my list of places to go and I really don't care how little those morons value infidels of the inferior sex. :-)
I am proud to be a follower of Jesus Christ, and I will laugh at any man who thinks his life is more valuable than any woman's. I'd like to see him reproduce his precious seed without a woman's help.
Hi, well that was an interesting read. I guess that in Saudi you can have a bad day, experience some road rage and run over about a dozen or so laborers just to make yourself feel better and then pay the diyyah with some pocket change and probably no jail time?!?! Astagfirallah.
As a side note, I live in the UAE. My husband tells me to be careful when driving in the the crowded pedestrian places because there will be men there who will walk right out in front of your car not caring whether or not you will hit them and kill them because the blood money will be enough to take care of their families back home. Makes you really think about their sad situation.
Maryann...funny enough I said that exact same thing on Carols blog as was accused of making things up...my comments were to be taken with "a grain of salt".
Vindicated I guess...sigh.
Coolred - I have heard similar stories about guys walking in front of (expensive) cars in order to get money for their families - tho most often the stories come from Bahrain or Dubai for some reason, not here in Saudi. It's gotta be terrifying!
Anyone that claims there is no racism in Saudi has never been in Saudi. It is a place rife with racism of every sort and kind - from the color of skin to nationality to ethnicity to tribal affiliation.
As always, thanks for your perspectives.
i always thought we are all equall ...oh well :S
Susanne - yeah I couldn't help but add the price of a good camel line - just for ironic perspective! lol Glad you appreciated it.
MaryAnn - it is a sad situation, in deed and one that doesn't really have a light at the end of the tunnel. I posted the other day about the treatment of domestic help...well the treatment of mosst workers is even worse.
Angie - thanks for joining the discussion and I hope to hear more from you in the future.
Ladies - thanks so much for the comments!
@ CoolRed hmmm I need to go and check Carol's blog and read all of the interesting comments then.
By Saudi law,If one takes another's life, he is sentenced to death, except if, if the family of the dead one forgives the killer. Plus the money values you stated are approximate (am not sure if there are such) and the family of the murdered guy can ask for what ever they want, it can reach up to 10 Million USD or more, and if the family of the murderd one is not satisfied they can ask for the killer to get his death penalty.
Mam, Saudi Arabia isn't perfect but it is absolutely not as you picture it, of racism and chaos.
I am a Saudi student at Pennsylvania State University, I encounter many things from Americans that are so disrespectful, but I don't judge them coz it is their culture, and it is how they were raised.I can stereotype America just as you stereotype Saudis, Americans are so selfcentered, superficial, whiners, spoiled, bitchy and in lots of cases rude, but I always choose to look on the bright side, which you can find almost anywhere. Too add, come back to the US and see how bad it is, I am talking about poverty and homelessness, I just visited D.C and for God's sake it has more than 14,000 homeless in the city alone. "DC is the jurisdiction with the highest child poverty rate in the United States" and "Nearly 1 out of 5 (19.1%) of DC residents—or 104,000 people—live at or below the poverty
line" Source At The End. #1
God, how I miss Saudia.
Mam, you have not seen all of Saudi Arabia, and you are missing a a lot.
To sum up, every nation has its good and bad and Saudi is no exception, plus life is to short not to enjoy it, stop whining, always look at the bright side and enjoy life to the maximum ;)
Regards,
Omar

I am a Saudi guy, and I have a sister and a mother and many Saudi lady friends, I show them respect, and I will literally hurt who doesn't. they are are pure and loving people and I would say that my sister's and mother's lives are more important than mine.
American females are the real poor creatures, here , at least at university, men use woman as a sex tool. It seems that Americans only think that life is all about money and sex.
I am guessing that you live in Riyadh, right ?
you know what, I should do my own blog and write what I see every day here at America.
