Real books for real women

I was watching CNN tonight and came across this video clip about Muslim women in Nigeria who are writing books for other women - books on topics like marriage and sex, dating, men, raising a family and running a house.

It made me wonder two things: 1) if such books already exist in Saudi and 2) if not, why? It would seem to be a great niche market - Saudi women writing for Saudi women, not fiction, not self-help really, but just the pratical ins and outs of life as a Saudi woman.

I was intrigued because of something one of the women being interviewed said...that she would know how to handle a specific situation because she'd read the book...

Anyway, here's the piece. And let me know what you think.

Viewing this I felt both hopeful and disgusted. I'm sorry. But, I am so so so so so TIRED of these men running women into the ground, as if they're nothing but baby machines!! I don't know if they're angry because of their standard of, "if the child can read it to the parent" or if it's because women may be gettting together to learn more and possibly think more. And, I mean really...if they're religious, then commom sense would dictate that if "god gave her a mind to think, she should use it", to not use it would be disrespectful. I'm hopeful because they dare to defy, and that's AWESOME!

I just wanted to say how much I do enjoy reading your blog. We moved to Bahrain in May from Texas, and I've learned a thing or two about the culture here. I may not always agree, but it is always nice to see how someone else in the area thinks/sees things. I was even inspired to start a small blog of my own to share my adventures with my friends and family. Keep up the great work! By the way, it sounds like you are a teacher as well???
