Here come the pirates!
Last year, we hosted a murder mystery party with the help of the fabulous people at Freeform Games, and it was such a hit that we just have to do it again!
Last year we chose Curse of the Pharaoh, set in turn-of-the-century Egypt during an archeaological dig. There was, of course, a murder to solve, but there was also plenty of intrigue to go around.
The game was easy to play - everyone got a character sheet that defined who they were and what their goals were for the night. They also had secret knowledge about one or two other characters that they could use as collateral.
The thing I liked most was that there were no scripts. Everything was spontaneous - total improv based on just a few tidbits, curiosity and a williness to play along. And of course, a great group of creative folks!
Our guests went to great lengths to stay in character, which made it all the more fun! I swear, one guest put on such a great French accent, I wanted to help him with when he paused to "remember" the English translation!
And, as you can see from the picture, the costumes they came up with were amazing! There were turbans and abayas and pith helmets and even a feather boa. Some guests brought props - others were so perfect for their characters they really didn't need anything!
Anyway, so this year we have chosen a new murder mystery from Freeform Games and it looks like it will be even MORE fun than last year! With a nod to Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, the name of the party is A Dead Man's Chest, and it's filled with pirates and scallywags! How fun is that? lol
The cool thing about throwing a costume party here in Saudi Arabia is the availability of great tailors who will custom-design whatever you ask them for.
I've already started searching for pirate costume ideas, and of course, we'll be watching Captain Jack in the next few weeks, just to make sure we are authentic!
